celebrate Black History Month With Directv

February is Black History Month, and dozens of DirecTV channels are hosting exclusive specials and programs to help celebrate. With the inauguration of the first black president in United States history, February will be extra-special this year. Your DirecTV channel lineup gives you great entertainment and an opportunity to learn about Black History right in your own living room.

Bio Television leads the lineup this year with a number of great biographies. The ever-beautiful Halle Berry, box-office great Denzel Washington, and hot Will Smith will all have their biographies aired in high definition on Bio in the month of February. These ultra-talented Hollywood greats have great stories that will entertain and enlighten you.

Turner Classic Movies will have some wonderful commercial-free programming during the month of February. "Glory," starring Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington, airs on February 21. "Boyz N the Hood," starring Laurence Fishburne and Cuba Gooding Jr., makes an appearance on February 8. Both of these movies were hailed by critics when first released, and if you've never seen them before, this February is the time to tune in.

Watch your programming guide for the powerful biography of Martin Luther King Jr., "Citizen King," airing on your DirecTV PBS station. This documentary delves deep into Dr. King's life through letters, personal interviews, giving depth to this man who is considered the father of the Civil Rights movement. PBS is available in High Definition, bringing this cornerstone channel to full life on your high definition television screen.

The Valentine's Day special on Bio during Black History Month is truly special—the romantic and touching story of Barry White, greatest crooner of all time. From humble beginnings, Barry White rose to stardom on the soul and disco music scene in the 1960s and 1970s. You've heard his tunes and can probably sing some of the lyrics—find out about the life and career of Barry White on Saturday, February 14.

Black Entertainment Television (BET) has a special lineup all month long. Use your programming guide to choose the programs you want to watch, or record them using your DirecTV DVR so you can watch them later. Don't miss a single one!

While not directly related to celebrating Black History Month, you can use your DirecTV channel guide to find reruns of such wonderful sitcoms as "Sanford and Son" and "The Jeffersons" almost any night of the week on TV Land. These shows were unique when they originally aired because they were about the 'black experience' - in a funny way. Like all sitcoms, these shows are welcome entertainment.

Black History Month started in the 1920s as a way to celebrate the unique contributions of African Americans to the culture of the United States. Since the explosion of television programming in the last decade, all Americans have a chance to explore the lives and times of African American leaders and entertainers in a whole new way. The programs offered on each DirecTV channel to celebrate Black History Month bring this distinctive culture to the forefront of our television viewing.
